Our Elementary School students follow a curriculum that exceeds the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. All courses conform to the Newark Archdiocese School Office Curriculum Guidelines. Our students consistently exceed local and national averages in standardized test scores.
Along with a respect for others, our first-grade program establishes a foundation for all subsequent learning. A combination of differentiated, literature-based reading and phonics programs gives our students a strong reading platform. Commencing in first grade, the curriculum includes a flexible level ability-grouped reading program that contains a strong phonics component based on the Science of Reading. Language arts is comprised of English grammar, sentence structure, writing skills, spelling, and handwriting. In Science, our students engage in scientific discovery through our spiraling curriculum that seamlessly weaves together the brilliance of Next-Generation Science Standards and the richness of current ELA and Math standards. Students engage in immersive experiments with research-grade science equipment and experience hands-on encounters with the wonders of science and technology.
The goal of second grade is to build upon and strengthen the skills learned in first grade while introducing new and more complex concepts. Heavy emphasis is placed on reading, mathematics, and communication skills. Phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension are stressed in the second-grade reading program. Manuscript writing is introduced. Math skills are reinforced regularly and students are challenged and encouraged to develop their math skills through our comprehensive core math program that provides online as well as print resources for the students and teachers. It fosters the students' conceptual understanding of concepts and builds problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It offers explicit instruction with guided and independent practice to strengthen students’ metacognitive development and incorporates applications related to STEM. In Science, our students engage in scientific discovery through our spiraling curriculum that seamlessly weaves together the brilliance of Next-Generation Science Standards and the richness of current ELA and Math standards. Students engage in immersive experiments with research-grade science equipment and experience hands-on encounters with the wonders of science and technology. Religion classes help the students as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.
Each core subject in this curriculum offers opportunities for enrichment and reinforcement. In addition to math fundamentals, students study measurement, geometry, fractions, multiplication, decimals, and probability. A strong emphasis is placed on writing skills, usage, and spelling. Traditionally, our third graders reenact the Nativity at our Christmas concert.
This rigorous academic program consists of all major subjects with the continued three-level reading curriculum. Weekly writing and math labs help the students become independent thinkers and effective communicators. Our fourth-grade students learn to take notes in outline form, organize data, analyze information, and read for a purpose ― all necessary skills for success in Middle School. Fifth Grade is a year of growth and transition at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. Students are becoming confident leaders while learning to hold themselves accountable.
In Fifth Grade, students learn through a dynamic and collaborative curriculum that both nurtures and challenges them to learn and grow as individuals. Classes consist of Religion, Math, Science, Social Studies, Literature, and Language Arts with an emphasis on essay writing and oral presentation. Spanish, Physical Education, Art, Technology, and Music are also important parts of our daily schedule. This interdisciplinary learning experience nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, setting our students on the path to becoming well-rounded scholars.
Prayer is a vital part of our day at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. Students begin and end their day in prayer, instilling the importance and essence of our Catholic values.
